My Story To Beating Insomnia

I suffered from insomnia for approximately 12 years from 1996 to 2008. I can remember times when I was so shattered, exhausted, feeling irritable, lethargic and depressed I forgot what feeling good actually felt like. I actually believed this was normal for life, having to put up with these symptoms like a spot that wouldn’t go away. I just tried to block it out of my mind and struggle on through life regardless.

The pleasure of living was gone.

The symptoms, mild at first slowly got worse and I literally had to force myself
out of bed in the morning after an un-refreshed night's sleep. I then struggled
to keep my eyes open during the daily commute to work where I was finding concentrating more difficult as the day went on.

This wasn’t living – it was existing! The pleasure of living was gone.

I had at least 10 different symptoms. Perhaps you suffer from some, or all of these:

Symptom # 1 Trouble Falling Asleep

Many people with insomnia have trouble falling asleep. I was no exception. After retiring to bed I’d just lie there listening to the noises of the night, staring at the starry sky, peering at the clock. No amount of tossing and turning or sleep position could get me to drop off. 

Symptom # 2 Difficulty Staying Asleep

Whenever I was fortunate enough to fall asleep upon retiring to bed, I found
that I was not able to stay asleep. I found myself awakening  a couple of hours later in the early hours, being unable to drop off again. No amount of tossing and turning could get me back in the land of nod again and therefore I had no option but to abandon the idea and I resigned myself to switching on my bed side light and burying my head in the latest spy thriller novel.

Symptom # 3 Waking Up Tired Or Feeling Sleepy

Insomnia also caused me to feel fatigued during the day. Even if I felt that I had a decent night's sleep I did not wake feeling refreshed. This caused me many other symptoms, including anxiety, irritability and frustration. This was starting to cause relationship problems with my (then) family, social life and work colleagues, with mood swings becoming more a regular occurrence. 

Symptom # 4 Depression.

I also had bouts of depression which my doctor informed me commonly accompanies insomnia. He recommended sedating me with antidepressants –
I politely declined - taking addictive pills with all their associated side effects
I felt was definitely not the way forward.

Symptom # 5 Chronic Illness

I found that insomnia affects the entire body. By not engaging in healthy sleep
I became more susceptible to chronic illness, or systemic diseases. These chronic illness involved many different symptoms and parts of the body. I found that I was catching more and more colds throughout the year and also being struck down with numerous nasty viruses due to insomnia lowering my bodies ability to fight them off. But even worse, I started to develop symptoms of arthritis in my hands.

Symptom # 6 Anxiety

Anxiety and stress are often side effects or symptoms of insomnia. I found myself constantly worrying without reason, insignificant small stuff that just didn’t matter. This again contributed to the breakdown of relationships with my family and social life. And to complete my misery, my fellow workers were beginning to lose patience with me.

Symptom # 7 Irritability

Irritability often arises from too little sleep. I found myself becoming irritable more often than not, snapping back at family friends and work colleagues. I even got reprimanded by my boss for reacting to a perfectly reasonable request from him in a not very pleasant manner.
 
Symptom # 8 Headaches

Another symptom I had from my insomnia was dismal headaches. Lasting for hours, sometimes days. The pain was sheer agony at times, throbbing, pulsating, pounding pain which more than often resulted in vomiting and nausea. Again the effects of this had profound effects on my relationships resulting in ruined family and social occasions and taking days off from work.

Symptom # 9 The Need For Caffeine Or Other Stimulants

I also found that I was becoming addicted to caffeine and other stimulants during my working day just to keep up with the day's tasks. It wasn’t uncommon for me to down 6-7 cups of strong black coffee during the day plus a couple of cans of coke from the canteen vending machine.

Symptom # 10 Chronic Need For Napping

When you have insomnia, you feel tired all the time. I for one had a persistent urge to sleep during the working day. This was embarrassing especially when it happened in meetings or seminars.

My co-workers found it highly amusing but my bosses were somewhat displeased. These occurrences definitely didn’t do my career prospects any favors.  Also falling asleep in front of the TV is not conducive to a happy family life when your children demand your attention and your wife wants quality time together. On a more worrying point, I even fell asleep at the wheel, luckily my passenger nudged me back to reality.

I was at a desperate point so I decided to book an appointment with a sleep specialist consultant in Washington D.C. His fee didn’t come cheap but I felt this was my only hope.

While on the train journey to Washington I was struggling to keep awake due to my usual meagre 2 hours sleep the previous night.

An old gentleman sitting across from me in the carriage noticed me keep nodding off and he obviously found it quite amusing at my attempts to stay awake.

"Seems like you didn’t get a good night's sleep last night” he quipped.

“No” I replied, ”I never seem to do these days”.

“You're an insomniac?” He queried.

“How did you guess?” I asked, “are you one too?"

"No" he answered, "I’m an ex-insomniac."

We then talked for the next hour on the train journey to D.C. He spilled the
beans on how he suffered from insomnia for ten long years.

He confessed to being addicted to sleeping pills, suffering from the side effects that are usually associated with them. That he got fired from his job due to not being able to concentrate and focus on the job in hand. Falling asleep at his desk, in meetings and on seminars, was a regular occurrence.

His family life suffered too, irritability and mood swings becoming the norm rather than an occasional occurrence. He wasn’t the most pleasant guy to be around he admitted and wasn’t surprised when his wife filed for divorce. Insomnia definitely wasn’t conducive to a harmonious family life he uttered.

I was spell bound and listening attentively on his every word and confession.

Then I noticed the train pulling into Union Station. He got up from his seat turned his back towards me to reach for his briefcase from the luggage rack.

”But how did you cure your insomnia” I asked in desperation.

The old man smiled, reached inside the pocket of his raincoat and pulled out a pen. He then scribbled down something on a napkin. As he handed the napkin to me he said: “ these my friend are two books of sleep wisdom that helped me to rid myself of insomnia.” I urge you to hunt down these two out of print books and follow them letter to the law.”

He then wished me good day and disappeared  into the departing crowd on the platform.

The two books he wrote down where  called ‘The Sleep Secret – How to Sleep without Pills’ and ‘The Natural Way to Healthful Sleep.’

I was intrigued. Could the answers to all my sleep problems be found within these two rare long lost forgotten books?

However I realised that I now had to focus on the reason for my being in Washington – my appointment with my sleep consultant.

I walked out of Union Station, jumped into a taxi and gave the address of the sleep consultant premises to the driver.

Upon my arrival I spent the first half hour filling out a plethora of forms, a patient registration form, a patient health questionnaire and a depression inventory.

The sleep consultant then went through the forms discussing with me my family history with regard to health, my current illnesses and ailments, how I slept as a child, do I now awaken to an alarm clock, do I snore, do I awake with heartburn, a 100 plus questions about my sleep lifestyle....

Concluding he said before we could progress and formulate a plan of action I needed to fill in a sleep diary over the following month. Every detail needed to be recorded, from what time I retired to bed the previous night, how long it took me to get me to sleep, to how much coffee, tea, or cola I had to drink that day.

He even gave me a further questionnaire to take home with me of for my partner to fill in regarding my sleep habits.

At the reception I paid the consultants fee and walked out onto the avenue with a feeling of despondency, disappointment and helplessness. I mean I had pinned all my hopes of curing my insomnia on the sleep consultant.

If he was to be successful in curing my insomnia, I realised it wasn’t going to happen overnight, maybe taking weeks or even months to achieve and also going by my credit card receipt I was staring at, was going to put a heavy financial burden on me over the coming months. 

I looked at my watch and realized I had three hours to kill before I needed to head back to Union Station for my return journey. I was feeling exhausted and shattered at this point and decided to pop into a cafe for a caffeine boost and decide how I was going to spend this spare time.

I reached into my pocket to search for change to pay the waitress when I pulled out with it the napkin the old man on the train had given me, with the name of the two books he strongly recommended.

It then came to me. This was how I was going to spend the next three hours – searching for these long lost manuscripts. What had I to lose? I had visited most of the tourist attractions of D.C on numerous occasions previously, including the White House and Capitol Hill. Anyway this would be more like a treasure trail, an adventure of sorts. It would be fun. I suddenly felt re-energized.

I immediately went on a book scouting mission visiting antiquarian books shops
in the quaint back streets of the Georgetown area of Washington.

After hunting through dusty bookshelves of five rare book shops without success
I realised that tracking down these books wasn’t going to be a walk in the park.

Bidding my farewell to the extremely helpful owner who assisted me in my fruitless search I walked out of the shop a little despondent, and began my walk down the lane contemplating giving up this impossible task when I heard the bookshop owner calling me back to the shop doorway ...

“The National Library of Congress – the largest shelf space and the most important library in the world – a haven of 128 million items including books, manuscripts, films, photographs, sheet music and maps, government publications and where your concerned out of print books will be,” he said excitedly. “That’s where you’ll find them – but you’ll have to hurry it closes in a couple of hours.”

I couldn’t thank the man enough. I hailed down a cab and within 20 minutes was climbing the steps to the entrance of the magnificent Library of Congress building.

After registering at the main reception and subsequently issued with an ID card
I was informed that to obtain the two books I requested that I would have to make my way down to the basement and through an underground passageway formed under the avenue into the Jefferson Building located on the other side
of the road.

The search for these two books was definitely starting to feel like a treasure
hunt.

Upon entering the Jefferson Building I had to fill out a slip where I entered the book title, authors name, date published, etc. The library assistant then looked the details up on the computer and cheerfully confirmed that the books were in stock. You can’t imagine the relief I felt when she uttered those words to me.

She then pointed me in the direction of the James Madison building where I handed the call slip to another library assistant. I had to wait 23 minutes till I was informed that my books were available on desk #35. That 23 minutes felt
like hours as I drank a cup of coffee pacing the isles of the library.

I then was guided to the main reading room on the 1st floor, a circular oak panelled lecture theatre.

As I entered the room a pin drop could be heard as
I strolled past tables of students with their heads buried in their books.

I then spotted my two books laying at table #35 ahead of me.

I sat down, opened the The Sleep Secret – How to Sleep without Pills’ and began to read. With the turning of each page I became more and more spellbound and engrossed. Then I moved on to The Natural Way to Healthful Sleep' being equally attention grabbing.

Both books were giving a natural alternative to curing insomnia – tips, tricks, strategies and techniques and pearls of wisdom from a bygone age were uncovered – a way to cure your insomnia quickly, easily, safely and naturally in

I then made my way to the exit and ran down the steps of the Library of Congress clutching the  photocopies to my chest. No way was I letting these two books of sleep pearls of wisdom out of my sight.

In fact, I only made my return train with minutes to spare.

When I returned home I did as the old gentleman urged me to do, following the author's recommendations to the letter.

The transformation in my life was dramatic. From feeling terrible, tired, shattered, exhausted, drained and depressed, miserable, unhappy to .... a total transformation of being happy, relaxed, focussed, confident and in very good health – a new sense of well being all within a matter of weeks!
